Art in Public Buildings Artwork Selected for University of Wyoming Aquatic Center

Artist Michele Gutlove has been selected to create a new public artwork, Dive In!, for the University of Wyoming Aquatic Center through the Art in Public Buildings program, administered by the Wyoming Arts Council.

Gutlove’s artwork is inspired by the reflections and movement of water, as well as the swimmers and divers who use the facility. Using glass-firing techniques, Gutlove will create dozens of glass plates that will be suspended from the ceiling of the Aquatic Center’s main hall. Spotlights will illuminate the installation, creating the effect of underwater reflections and movement as visitors make their way to the pool.

The Art in Public Buildings selection process begins with a public Request for Qualifications (RFQ), followed by the selection of finalists and review by a project committee. Wyoming artists are given preference throughout the process. The committee for this project, which included key stakeholders from the University of Wyoming and members of the Laramie community, selected Gutlove’s proposal for the new facility.

The Art in Public Buildings program is administered by the Wyoming Arts Council and was established in 1991 to set aside a portion of capital construction funds for the commissioning of public art. Since then, more than 200 works of art have been placed in and around public buildings across Wyoming. Gutlove, who is based in Natick, Massachusetts, will add a new site-specific work at the University of Wyoming to that collection.
